Becoming a Medical Herbalist
Becoming a Medical Herbalist is an enriching and life-changing process.
Students undertake a BSc degree in Herbal Medicine at an accredited institution which will cover the following areas.
Knowledge
Sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, botany, diagnostic procedures, physical examination, materia medica, posology, nutrition, diet, orthodox medicines and procedures, practice management, health and safety, medical legislation.
Skills
Skills of communication with patients and other professionals, history taking, health assessment, maintaining a clean and secure dispensary, herbal pharmacy, liaison with other practitioners.
Understanding
An understanding of the ethics of professional practice, issues of confidentiality, botanical therapeutics, the responsibility to maintain fitness to practise and the need for continuing professional and personal development.
In addition to theoretical education, students undertake a minimum of 500 hours supervised clinical training.
BSc programmes in herbal medicine are accredited by the NIMH Accreditation Board [link to vii The Accreditation Board and Contact Us] and by the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA) Accreditation Board: www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ehpa/accreditation.htm
Graduates of NIMH or EHTPA accredited courses are eligible to apply for membership of NIMH.
