The Annual Herb Walk: 2017

This increasingly popular annual event is not to be missed. We will take a leisurely stroll in a nature reserve and look to identify and discuss medicinal plants that are growing wild. You will learn about identification, history and medicinal use of natures gifts to humanity. Past attendees have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and often return in subsequent years. 

The walk is led by qualified medical herbalist, Varsha.

Herb Walk Disclaimer
This walk is provided for pleasure and education purposes only. The walk is scheduled to last between 20 minutes to 2 hours and will cover a maximum of 1 ½ miles. The terrain is uneven and may be muddy in places, it is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility. Minors should be accompanied by their parents or guardians. The walk should only be undertaken if you feel well enough to do so and are wearing suitable clothing and sturdy footwear.

Many edible and medicinal plants will be pointed out and discussed. Some wild plants are poisonous and accurate identification is essential prior to picking any plants and ingesting them. No liability is accepted for such occurrences. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant you are advised against eating any wild plants, which you have not had previous exposure to.

Join Jo on a lovely countryside walk to discover wonderful remedies available from your hedgerow. Find the benefits of those pesky weeks and the plants we see nestled in our hedgerows day in and day out, without even noticing them.

This is a beautiful walk and one of my favourite things to do to destress and chill is to get out into the fresh air and take in the views, so if for no other reason than to get out and get moving - do join us!

Meet in the pub car park for setting off at 10.30am. The walk will be on mixed ground with one 'challenging' hill. Children allowed and indeed welcomed! It's never too soon to start learning about our wonderful native plants - Children free of charge but please do let me know how many you are bringing with you

Cost is usually £10 per person but due to Herbal Medicine Week I am offering this at a 50% discount price of only £5 per person.

A Course in Herbal Medicine

Do you want to learn how to take care of simple health conditions at home with medicinal herbs?
This course will help you learn ways to apply herbs effectively for everyday ailments and think differently about health and healing.

The aim is to help you:

  • develop skills as a home herbalist
  • learn holistic strategies and remedies for treating and preventing some common conditions
  • use herbs safely, understand dosage, interactions etc
  • make your own herbal medicines such as tinctures, syrups and salve

We will cover over twenty medicinal herbs and look at the herbal treatment of stress, insomnia, digestive issues, colds, flu and allergies such as hayfever. There will be a mix of theory and hands-on medicine making, with remedies to take home.

Nature Herb Walk

Our nature herb walk will be on the 18th June. It will start in the car park of Spalding Lifestyle and Gardening Centre (210 Spalding Road, Spalding, Lincs. PE11 3PB), adjacent to Johnson Community Hospital. We request that you arrive 10-15 minutes before we start so that we are able to get everyone signed in, in order to get a prompt start.


The walk will take about two hours and is approximately 2 miles long. The route is varied and will combine the peace and tranquillity of off street public footpaths and cycle ways, alongside water courses, through wooded areas, and a wild flower meadow combined with busy roadside footpaths. As we travel through this varied landscape we will point out a variety of different plants and trees that have medicinal uses and explain how we use them in modern day Western herbalism and what we use them for.

As described, the walk will take us over many different types of terrain. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing on the day, reflecting whatever our beautiful British weather has to offer us!

Tickets are £10 per person which will include a handout for you all to take home, briefly describing the information given over the course of the walk for future reference. Contact us if you would like to pre-book tickets as there are limited places to ensure your health and safety. Deposit /payment details will then be forwarded.

Phytology’s Herbal Medicine summer workshop offer an introduction to the native plants growing in the medicinal meadow at the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, alongside practical information about how to use these herbs safely and effectively in the home for many different ailments. Following on from the first Herbal Workshop on Balance, the following workshops will focus on Protection, Cleansing, and Detox. These workshops can be taken individually or as a series. Gain hands on experience making your own bespoke lip and body balm using fresh herbs from the Phytology meadow. We will explore the properties of different carrier oils for external use, learn the different techniques of infusing herbs into oils and you will create a bespoke lip balm to take away with you.
